Environmental Factors Shape Outdoor Heat Exposure

INTERACTIVE WEBSITE

The NYC Urban Heat Portal maps and visualizes multiple temperature indicators to reveal neighborhood-level heat exposure patterns and provide actionable insights.
To assess the overall risk of outdoor heat exposure across New York City, the Outdoor Heat Exposure Index integrates several environmental factors — including mean radiant temperature, surface temperature, cool roof coverage, tree canopy, and permeable surfaces.

Users can also explore daily weather station data from summer months (2013–2023) to compare locations by the number of days each year that meet extreme heat advisory conditions.
